One day, a classmate of his, the reclusive Hitagi Senjōgahara, falls down the stairs into Koyomi's arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs nothing, in defiance of physics. Despite being threatened by her to keep away, Koyomi offers his help and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a strange middle-aged man living in an abandoned building, who cured him of being a vampire.
Once Koyomi helps solve Hitagi's problem, she decides to become his friend. To deal with the spectres, Koyomi relies on guidance from Oshino and, later, from Shinobu, the same vampire who attacked him, now with the appearance of an eight-year-old girl.
Most heroines have an item that symbolises their spectres, such as Hitagi's stapler (the claw of a crab), Mayoi's backpack (the shell of a snail), Suruga's arm (the arm of a monkey), Nadeko's hat and jacket (the head and skin of a snake), and Karen's (the colors of a bee). Yes, the author wrote the story in anachronological order. This was to create mysteries and suspense. It’s not like Haruhi which could be watched in either order. The appropriate chronological order (Season 1 + 2): 1.

It is considered as a part of the first season. From reddit. Just wondering about Hanamonogatari. With the BD release, was the ED and OP switched from its original broadcast version?
I noticed that all the broadcast versions I found had used the fully animated sequence (with the basket ball scene and all) as the ED as opposed to the OP (basically it’s reversed from the norm) and it made for an interesting choice in terms of direction. Checking my files, it seems that it’s been reversed. In this regard, did you purposely switch it from the broadcast version yourselves, or was this purposely done on the BD release itself? @coalgirl: Huh that definitely makes me curious. I know it’s too late, but it would’ve been interesting to have the last one reversed as a thematic cap-off to the story since I thought it made for a cathartic viewing experience with the broadcast versions (specifically, after watching the whole thing, since you finally get the whole picture of the story, you can realize and understand the full context behind the OP’s animated sequences, with it being the “missing link” of Kanbaru and Numachi’s history). Still I should mention this isn’t to knock against you guys, just that it would’ve been interesting if there was an option to switch the OP/ED for the last episode.
